Ovulation Summary Ovulation is the release of an egg from the ovary. The egg then passes into the fallopian tube where it is ready to be fertilised. In order for pregnancy to occur, the egg must be fertilised by sperm within 24 hours after its release. Immediately prior to ovulation, the body produces a large amount of luteinizing hormone (LH) that triggers the release of a ripened egg from the ovary. This "LH surge" usually takes place in the middle of the menstrual cycle. How does the test work? - OVUNOW Ovulation Test measures Luteinizing Hormone (LH), although this hormone is always present in your urine LH increases just before your most fertile day of your menstrual cycle.
- This LH surge triggers the release of and egg from one of your ovaries. Most women will ovulate within 24-36 hours after the LH surge is detected. Predicting ovulation in advance is important because the egg can only be fertilized 6-24 hours after ovulation.
- Therefore you are most likely to become pregnant if you have intercourse the day you see this LH surge and the day after the surge.
When to start testing for ovulation - First, you must determine your cycle length , which is the number of days from the first day of menstrual bleeding to the day before bleeding begins on the next menstrual cycle (Refer to WHEN TO START CHART) to determine when testing should begin).
- If you do not know your cycle length, you may begin testing 9 days after the first day of menstrual bleeding since the average cycle length is 28 days.
- Perform one test each day over a five-day period or until the LH surge has been detected.
When to Start Chart Your Cycle Length | Day To Start On | | 21 Days | Day 4 | | 22 Days | Day 5 | | 23 Days | Day 6 | | 24 Days | Day 7 | | 25 Days | Day 8 | | 26 Days | Day 9 | | 27 Days | Day 9 | | 28 Days | Day 9 | | 29 Days | Day 9 | | 30 Days | Day 10 | | 31 Days | Day 10 | | 32 Days | Day 11 | | 33 Days | Day 12 | | 34 Days | Day 13 | | 35 Days | Day 14 | | 36 Days | Day 15 | | 37 Days | Day 16 | | 38 Days | Day 17 | | 39 Days | Day 18 | | 40 Days | Day 19 |
Urine collection - Do not collect your first morning urine sample after waking up.
- For best results collect urine sample between 10am and 8pm, preferably at about the same time each day.
- Reduce liquid intake for two hours prior to testing, this avoids dilution of LH in the urine sample.
- Collect urine in a clean dry container, and test urine at room temperature.
Performing the ovulation test - When you are ready to being testing, open the sealed pouch by tearing along the notch. Remove the test device from its foil pouch and use it as soon as possible.
- Immerse the strip into the urine sample with the arrow end toward the urine. Do not immerse past the MAX (marked) line. Take the strip out after 5 seconds and lay it on a clean, dry surface.
- Read result when coloured bands appear as shown in the diagrams. Result will vary depending on LH concentration levels in the urine sample. Wait 5 minutes and read results, any results obtained after 10 minutes should be considered invalid.
Interpretation of results | POSITIVE: If two lines are visible, but the line in test region (T) is the same as or darker than the one in the control region (C). It indicates that you will probably ovulate in 24-36 hours. | | NEGATIVE: If two lines are visible, but the line in the test region (T) is lighter than the one in the control region (C), or if there is no line in the test region (T). It indicates that no LH surge has been detected. | | INVALID: Control line fails to appear. Insufficient specimen volume or incorrect procedural techniques are the most likely reasons for control line failure. Review the procedure and repeat the test with a new test strip. | Ovulation test limitations - The test works only when the test procedures are precisely followed.
- Do not reuse the test strip.
- For in vitro diagnostic use only.
- In laboratory trials OVUNOW Ovulation Test is highly accurate at more than 99% in detecting an LH surge in urine samples.
- The test should not be used as a contraception device or birth control.
